About us
We set this charity up to benefit horses in need of care and attention and, in particular, to provide sanctuary for retired, abandoned, mistreated or lost
horses. We will take in all the horses we can, subject to the constraints of the space available, the most needy being our first concern.
Carraty Bottom Equine Retirement and Rescue
Dawn and Jim
Dawn has owned her own horses for 44 years since 1970. Jim has owned and looked after horses for 20 years but was involved with horses since
his first riding lesson in 1978. Jim and Dawn first got involved with horse rescue and retirement in 2004 when they took on a starving and un-
socialised mare and foal. The animals were so timid and frightened that they could not be approached or caught without corralling them into the
stable. After a year of nurturing and special diet and supplements to bring them back to health they were re-homed together to a loving new
home who agreed that they would never be parted. Since then Dawn and Jim have taken in or been closely involved with the rescue of over 30
horse, having up to 16 horses in their care at a time, bringing on and re-homing the vast majority. Dawn was also involved with the Shetland
rescue organisation, assisting the founder and travelling around the country to collect mistreated and unwanted Shetlands who would otherwise
be destroyed being our first concern.
